About

Discover the long-forgotten stories and tales from Atlantic Canada. I had not lived in Nova Scotia for very long before I became enthralled in the history and stories of Canada’s Atlantic provinces. This blog documents some of the stories that I found interesting. Hope you do too.

The name comes from a section in a journal called The Provincial or Halifax Monthly Magazine. Published in the 1800s, it was authored by Mary Jane Lawson (Katzmann), who lived in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. In a section called Tales of Our Village, she wrote about the people and places in Dartmouth and Halifax, as well as stories from anywhere that she found interesting. She wrote the earliest history of Dartmouth that is still being used by researchers to this day. You can read more about her here.

I immediately felt a close connection to Mary Jane. She lived in the same neighbourhood as I do; she loved history; she had a curiosity about everything around her and often wrote about them. So, in her honour, I have named this website after her popular series.

This website uses the typeface Gibson, designed by Canadian type designer, Rod McDonald from Lake Echo, Nova Scotia. You can buy Gibson at Canada Type, www.canadatype.com
